"Of course, we are talking about natural beauties and traditional Adriatic architecture, but the special attraction of Vis also lies in its atmosphere. During the summer Vis is considerably different from the islands of Hvar, Brač or Korčula. The main reason for this is probably that Vis offers only a very small number of hotel beds so this island is mainly visited by people who like it for their own specific reasons and not by "regular tourists" who may have seen its name in a brochure and thought it might be a nice place to visit." These are the words of Jonathan Bousfield, an Englishman specialized in writing about Croatia for a notable edition of the Rough Guide tourist book guides who chose Vis amongst his Top 5 choices of Croatian destinations.
We know that one of the reasons for Vis' uniqueness lies in its many years of isolation as a military island where time had stopped. However, as so often happens in life, the thing that once seemed to be a disadvantage in the end turns out to be an important advantage. So, Vis' exclusiveness lie in the island itself; its untouched nature and the people that haven't been possessed by tourist commercialization but who are hospitable in an authentic, "native" way.
Vis is known for its culinary delights - "Vis cake" of sardines and "Vis hlib", delicacy made of figs. What the island of Vis makes special is a clean and beautiful sea, numerous bays, pebble and sandy beaches, hidden bays to which one "comes a little harder." Preserving its beauty, bays are true oasis of peace and perhaps the greatest value of the island offers. Because of the large number of hidden bays Vis is a paradise for boaters. Many visitors, and especially the yachtsmen, are coming more and more to island and town Vis. In every moment you can see changes in life-style, but at the same time Vis has kept the old, irresistible Mediterranean charm and life without stress and trouble. Vis is a small island, with rocky shore which is 77 kilometres long, located on the open sea, 45 kilometres from the mainland and it is surrounded by it's archipelago which consists of many smaller islands and islets. The climate on the island of Vis is Mediterranean, and since it is located on the open sea, the minimum temperature on the island is always few degrees higher than on the mainland or other islands. Thanks to its climate the island of Vis is one of the best locations in Croatia for growing lemons and other citruses. Vis is connected with mainland with ferry connection that operates three to four times per day, and catamaran connections. There are two main towns on the island, the town of Vis and the town of Komiza and many smaller settlements along the coast and in the interior. In the past, Komiza was mainly fishermen's port and town of Vis agricultural and merchant centre. Both are located in well protected bays, and the ferry port is located in the town of Vis. Vis is a small island so it is very easy to get around and explore local beaches, beautiful nature and flora and fauna of the island. We advise you to also explore the interior of the island, because it has as much to offer as popular coastal destinations. The development of tourism on the island of Vis began in 1990's. Since the island was designated as a military base during communist Yugoslavia, it was closed to almost all visitors, especially foreigners, and tourism did not develop. After the independence of Croatia, the tourism industry began to develop, and Vis today is amongst most popular island destination in Croatia, partly because it started to develop only recently, thus preserving its original charm and beauty, still unspoiled by modern tourist industry.
