Just 4km away there’s one of the few sandy beaches in Croatia; Lanterna Beach, sat along the magnificent bay with family facilities, separate freshwater pools and a café. There’s even a beach bar which serves up delicious cocktails and has a DJ playing throughout the day and into the evenings. The historic old town of Porec is just a 10-minute drive away; full of life with its shopping, water sports and wealthy marinas.
Originally two settlements, today Tar and Vabriga are joined into one town separated by the main road connecting Poreč and Novigrad-Cittanova. This is a fertile plateau at a height of 112 meters above sea level, which on one side slopes towards the sea and on the other towards the mouth of the Mirna River. This region is famed for its exceptional olive oil. FAO experts have declared that the finest olive oil in Europe comes from these very parts, from Larun olive groves below Tar. The olive plantations that surround Tar and Vabriga and descend from the hinterland all the way to the sea, due to their extraordinary location, give oil of exceptional quality that is recognized around the world. The olive oil from Tar and Vabriga is recommended by renowned olive oil guidebooks. The tastings in the households of hardworking producers and walks along the centuries-old olive groves provide memorable experience for all the senses. Fishing has always been important for this area. In the Tar Bay, where freshwater and saltwater mix together, fish is caught in a special way. Shoals of fish are surrounded by fishing nets, sometimes even two kilometres long, and dragged to the shore. The best known fishing bay of this area is Santa Marina, abundant in shells, fishing nets and picturesque boats that go to the open sea at sunset. All these delicacies can be tasted in the bay restaurants, while enjoying the local atmosphere and the view of the fishermen at sea. One of the specialties are sardines salted by hardworking local landladies. Wines and cheeses made under the sun, bora wind and sea air are also the delicacies of this region, worth experiencing in households, taverns, restaurants, tasting rooms... The area of Tar and Vabriga is where you can truly feel the warmth and hospitality of the local people. The hosts generously open the doors of their homes as well as their hearts, proudly offering the welcoming signs concealing the secret arts and crafts of their ancestors, original flavours and scents.
